"Operation Reframe"
My platform involves 5 pillars, which embody "Reframing" student life and experiences. The "MSU App" symbol indicates that the pillar will be facilitated primarily through my proposed MSU App. In addition to the summary of each pillar below, please find attached my detailed written platform.
01
Reframe your in-person experience
Renovations to 3 spaces:
1. TwelvEighty Bar and Grill
-
Complete renovations, including TVs
-
Hybrid style restaurant: casual space before 7pm, after 7pm (Thursday-Saturday) sports bar with “bar bites” menu
-
Make 1280 a great space to host events for MSU affiliates and non MSU affiliates, and a great place to spend time with friends
-
Maintain same low prices and high quality
2. The Hub
-
The Hub, located next to DBAC, is new as of 2023
-
In addition to its current use (relaxation and prayer spaces), I propose maximizing the full potential of the space
-
The main area has a small amphitheater: can be used for poetry nights, open mics, concerts, performances, etc.
-
There is a beautiful hall (nicer version of CIBC hall): can be a space for our stakeholders to host large events
3. On Campus Homecoming
-
The return of homecoming on campus, since 2019
-
Encouraging large gatherings and events throughout the day while utilizing our biggest spaces to host them
-
i.e., an extremely large concert taking place on Ron Joyce Stadium
02
Reframe your digital experience
-
Facilitated through the MSU App
-
Rewards program for students: by interacting with the MSU, using a personalized QR code, students can earn rewards in one of two ways:
-
Redeem for ambassadorship points - with enough points, students can achieve MSU ambassador status (can be used on resumes and applications)
-
Redeem for cash vouchers - which can be used at any of MSU’s food and beverage services (e.g., 1280, The Grind, Union Market)
-
Refer-a-friend program: encourage a friend to download the app using your code - you and them both receive redeemable points - used for reward program
-
Flash coupons for MSU affiliates on and off campus (e.g., 40% off coupon at Chatime for the next 2 hours)
Future directions & integration:
-
The legacy of the MSU app will span beyond my term as President. The app has potential beyond anything offered by the MSU before and can integrate many processes that currently exist in other mediums in an effort to concentrate all student life to be facilitated through it.
-
These include:
-
Welcome week facilitation
-
Ticket sales
-
Club registration
-
Discussion forums for students
-
-
The potential is limitless and the practicality of it will be unmatched.
03
Reframe your understanding
-
One repercussion of COVID-19 is many students fail to understand the various supports and services put on not only by the MSU but its affiliates
-
e.g., the HSR bus pass and Tuesday Fortinos discounts are due to the MSU
-
One of the biggest issues is there is an overwhelming amount of information that makes it difficult to filter through for students
-
-
My mission is for every single student to learn about at least one way that the MSU does support, or can support them as a student
-
Facilitated by the MSU App to streamline information based on students’ interests
-
Upon first sign in to your account, you will be able to answer roughly 10-15 questions that will help the app’s AI create a personalized feed for you
-
e.g., "Do you commute?", "What program are you in?", "Click some of your following interests"
-
-
The home page will have a “feed” - only containing information that pertains to your profile
-
04
Reframe our Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, Indigeneity, and Accessibility (EDIIA) practices
-
Throughout my time with the MSS I have been committed to ensuring the EDIIA practices of the society are being upheld in every regard
-
This has given me experience providing a full scope assessment of all practices within an organization and ensuring that they are up to date with EDIIA at the forefront
-
-
In order to translate this to the MSU, I will conduct a similar review of all event planning, hiring, and training practices following the election and prior to my term
-
To ensure these are upheld, I will work to create Memorandums of Understanding with each of the Faculty Societies, MSU Clubs, and all other stakeholders that outline and root the MSU in it’s EDIIA values
-
I will complete this work alongside the Student Success Centre (SSC) and the Equity and Inclusion Office (EIO), not only in the scope of the review, but to also advocate for more equitable academic learning spaces to integrate universal design
05
Reframe student group integration
-
There is a lack of connection between student groups on campus
-
Cause: a lack of cohesion amongst the MSU, its clubs, and the faculty societies
-
Outcome: very little opportunity for collaboration amongst them, and left out areas of support that may be provided
-
-
This is our opportunity to reframe the interaction between groups to ensure that more support is provided for each of them from the MSU, and to spark more collaboration amongst them
Clubs:
-
Organized forums to provide a space for like- minded clubs to confer, collaborate, and ensure they’re providing unique events that fulfill their niches
-
Each club category’s representative on the Clubs Advisory Committee (CAC) will meet with the various clubs Presidents of their division to aid in collaboration and support
-
Clubs will be able to post in the information section of the MSU App so students with interests aligning with a club’s niche will be able to learn about the club’s events to help support their attendance
Faculty societies:
-
Increase integration amongst the faculty societies and the SRA reps to serve as liaisons between each other
-
Restructure the president’s council to promote equity amongst all faculty societies and ensuring each of their voices are heard in academic and non-academic matters
-
Facilitate more collaboration and support between the MSU and faculty societies so inter-faculty events can occur more regularly
-
Work with SSC to ensure that faculty societies are given more opportunity to learn about and work with the university on academic based issues that have been mainly faculty dominated historically
