Opening Letter
Dear McMaster,
Over the past four years there has been a drought. I do not refer to the normal kind of drought where rainfall fails to nourish the residing lands. I refer to a drought of life, energy, and passion at McMaster U. The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have continued to present effects that impact the entirety of the student body, and what was once one of the liveliest and spirit-filled campuses in North America, has yet to recover from the ensuing effects. The leaders who have come before me have done a masterful job of mitigating the academic and internal facing effects of the pandemic, but it is time for a leader to come along and revitalize the energy that once fueled this university’s day-to-day life. I believe that I can be the individual who can provide the plan of action that not only reverses the negative effects of this drought, but enacts it to account for the post-pandemic world - prioritizing technology and ensuring that Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, Indigeneity and Accessibility (EDIIA) are at the forefront. My name is Luca Bernardini, and I am running to not only serve as your McMaster Students Union (MSU) President but to fulfill the true needs of McMaster University. Below I have outlined my campaign platform in detail so you can best understand my plan, Operation Reframe, and why I believe that I am the best person for the job. By gathering various perspectives around the university, many of the MSU practices and services desperately need to be Reframed and I intend to be the individual that does so. I pride myself on the value of dedication to serve others, and if I should be elected, I can guarantee that nobody will give this role more than I intend to.
I have spent the last three years with the McMaster Science Society (MSS), wherein the last two I served as the President. I can honestly say that has been the best and most rewarding experience of my life. The honour I have had to serve over the nearly 9000 students enrolled in the Faculty of Science (FoS) has helped me to understand the passion I have for advocating for the needs of others. I have worked tirelessly, alongside my team at the MSS, to ensure the needs of the FoS are met by using the unique and equally valuable perspectives of all our students/stakeholders to inform these decisions. I have gained invaluable skills which include managing a large team, advocating for the needs of a large group, and ensuring that the perspectives of all individuals are accounted for. I would be more than happy to elaborate further upon any of the aforementioned skills, or any others that I have gained along the way. More information about me can be found on my website (https://luca4msupresident.wixsite.com/luca-bernardini) and my inbox (luca4msupresident@gmail.com) is always open. As for now, please enjoy the full scope of Operation Reframe and I hope I can inspire you just as much as the students of McMaster have inspired me.
Sincerely,
Luca
